Budongo Forest Reserve is part of Murchison Falls National Park. It’s situated in northern Uganda, approximately 195Kms from Kampala – the capital city of Uganda.  Budongo is the biggest Mahogany Forest found in the whole of East Africa as well as habitat to the largest number of chimpanzees throughout Uganda. The major tourist sites within this forest are: the Kaniyo Pabidi Ecotourism site, Busingiro Ecotourism site and Kaniyo Pabidi Ecotourism site which are located at boundaries to Murchison Falls National Park and dominated by Mahogany and Iron-wood trees.

Budongo Forest is popular for chimpanzee trekking, habituation, birding, forest walk and so on. For that case if you are looking to going on a Uganda safari, here are the five reasons to track chimpanzees in Budongo Forest:

  • Shorter distance compared to other chimpanzee homes. Its 3-4hrs drive from Entebbe or Kampala to Budongo Forest. In comparison, its 5-6hrs drive from Entebbe to Kibale National Park, 6hrs drive from Entebbe to Kyambura gorge, Kalinzu and Toro- Semuliki game reserve. For that case, Budongo forest is more convenient compared to other chimpanzee homes in Uganda.
  • Amazing chimpanzee Habitat- Budongo Forest is dominated by Mahogany trees. The trees are tall and capped with amazing canopies which attracts guests the more. The 115-kilometer expanse is a remote chunk of the Budongo forest, well protected to habours many chimpanzees.
  • Budongo Forest is a haven of many attractions including primates like black-and-white colobus, red-tailed monkey, blue monkey, and olive baboon. Nocturnal primates include potto and various forest galago species. The rarely seen tree pangolin is also resident. in addition, there are 290 butterfly’s species, 130 Moths species, 465 tree species, as well as 24 mammals nine of which are actually primates. While trekking chimpanzees in Budongo Forest, there are high chances of encountering other many attractions.
  • Budongo forest is highly protected – it caters for the safety of the tourist and the wild life within the forest. The forest is situated in Murchison Falls National park- the largest and the officially gazette place for tourist. All Uganda parks are under control and protected by Uganda wildlife Authority in conjunction with Tourist police.

In conclusion, there are many reasons as to trek chimpanzees in Budongo forest but in this article, the writer has solicited the major five.
