The Bugungu Airstrip is now open for commercial flights. The airstrip lies a few kilometers from the park headquarters. Airlines that operate domestic flights and tour companies that book their guests at either Nile Safari Camp, Red Chili or Sambiya River Lodge are especially informed.
However people traveling to Masindi town but are interested in riding through the national park, or tourists staying at Paraa Safari Lodge could also use Bugungu Airstrip.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on 7th June 2004 issued a license granting the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) permission to open up the airstrip for commercial use after inspecting and declaring the facilities technically ready for use. The decision to issue a license by Civil Aviation Authority was guided by the following developments at Bugungu Airstrip:
· A 500-meter access road was opened up, resurfaced and compacted
· A new building to house a radio room and an office was constructed
· A fuel storeroom was in place as well as adequate toilet facilities
· The length of the runway was increased from 1200m to 1530m
· The runway was widened from 10m to 23m
· Most of the runway surface was resurfaced with murram and compacted
· A hangar was constructed
· An aerodrome licence fee of Ush438, 750 was paid.
Bugungu Airstrip can accommodate most aircraft including the small Cessna, the Caravan, and the Lek-410. UWA will be charging a landing fee of Ush5, 000 per person in addition to the entrance fee.
Uganda Wildlife Authority hopes that this will make visits to the Murchison Falls National Park more convenient and stress free.
