Kichumbanyobo Gate lies on the eastern boundary of Murchison Falls National Park. It is accessed via the Masindi–Paraa road, which passes through Kanyo–Pakanyi and the Budongo Forest Reserve.
This route was fully upgraded under the National Oil Roads Programme (Midstream Trunk Infrastructure Project, 159 kilometers), with completion milestones achieved in August 2024.
The entire stretch from Masindi town through Budongo to the gate and onwards to the Top of the Falls now has a fully sealed bitumen surface. This upgrade substantially reduced travel time and eliminated wet-season impassability.
Gate Function and Role
This gate remains the most direct point of entry for travelers from Kampala, Hoima, and Masindi.
It provides unbroken road access into the park’s southern circuit and leads onward to Paraa via sealed internal connectors.
With the completion of the Paraa Bridge across the Victoria Nile, vehicular transit between the southern and northern tourism zones is now uninterrupted.
The ferry crossing, which previously limited mobility to fixed schedules and capacity, is no longer in use.
Infrastructure and Clearance Procedures
Gate infrastructure was improved alongside the road upgrades. The checkpoint features a paved access apron, a ranger post, a ticket office, and a dedicated turn-in bay for both private and tour vehicles.
Uganda Wildlife Authority staff verify entry permits, ID documents, and vehicle category at the checkpoint.
Mobile money and card payments are generally accepted, but occasional connectivity gaps have been reported, and carrying cash is a practical backup.
Vehicle Requirements and Movement Efficiency
With the tarmac completed throughout the main approach corridor, vehicles of all types can now access Kichumbanyobo Gate year-round.
Tour operators still recommend 4×4 vehicles for interior park roads beyond Paraa, particularly during rainy periods.
However, the sealed road up to the gate and beyond to the Top of the Falls removes the previous limitation where saloon vehicles risked getting stuck in Budongo during April and November rains.
